Pepe the Frog began life as an innocuous cartoon figure envisioned by artist Matt Furie. However as his popularity grew he became the iconic symbol of the self styled “Alt right” and became synonymous with Anti Semitism, Neo Nazism and hate crime.
Pepe is one of the most common memes on the internet. There is a campaign underway for him to be reclaimed and disassociated with the haters but as a high profile, instantly recognisable symbol it is unlikely the far right will give up this hate frog without a fight.
We would remind our readers not to share any images involving this hate frog as you may be inadvertently spreading a message that could offend. If you do need to depict Pepe, best to censor it as we have here.
